Churchill married and lived happily ever after…

Winston Churchill, the indomitable hero who inspired Britain to victory over the Nazis, was a sucker for romantic endearments.

According to The Sun, in letters donated to the nation by his beloved Clementine’s family, soppy notes to Churchill from Clemmie were revealed for the first time.

In one letter, dated a month before their wedding in 1908 and addressed to “my dearest one”, besotted Clemmie declares: “This is a little picture of my heart to show you what it contains.” Within it she had written his name – “Winston”.

Another note refers to Churchill as “my sweet amber boy” and “my precious one”.

“Churchill himself wrote, ‘I married and lived happily ever afterwards’,” said Allen Packwood, director of the Churchill Archives Centre in Cambridge.

The letters, made public on the centenary of the pair tying the knot, together with photos of the couple shed fascinating new light on the private life of Churchill.

Sir Winston was known as “Bill” to friends and family.

When he died in January 1965, he and Clemmie had been married for over 50 years
