PHF confident of cementing hockey ties with India

Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) officials are confident of cementing hockey ties with India just weeks after the Indian government blocked its junior team’s tour of Pakistan over security concerns.

PHF president Qasim Zia met Aslam Khan, the convener of the ad hoc committee running Indian hockey, in Los Angeles on the sidelines of an International Hockey Federation (FIH) Congress earlier this week. The two will meet again after the FIH elections to be held in LA on Saturday.

A PHF official said Friday that Qasim and Aslam are likely to finalise a strategy for the revival of hockey at both the senior and junior level.

The PHF official said that the Indians are also very keen to play regular matches against Pakistan on home-and-away basis.

Pakistan was supposed to host Indian juniors for five Tests earlier this month but the tour was not cleared by Indian government. The cash-strapped PHF later said that it suffered losses of around five million rupees because of the last-minute cancellation of the series.

The PHF top bosses are also trying to ensure maximum possible representation of Pakistan on the various FIH committees. Pakistan was almost wiped out from the FIH at the last elections.
