After having achieved success with director Shyam Benegal’s Welcome To Sajjanpur writer Ashok Mishra is now looking forward to Shyam Benegal’s next a political satire. Ashok Mishra has been associated with director Shyam Benegal right from 1987 with his epic serial Bharat Ek Khoj. However, what Ashok Mishra enjoys the most is writing scripts based on political background. “I simply love the subject and
enjoy it,” he says. “There is so much humor attached to it. Lalu Prasad is so popular that he is no less than a star. At times, our scripts make the politicians insecure. Unfortunately, politics in real life is like a brainless child” he adds.
“Working with a director like Shyam Benegal is a pleasure. My creativity is retained because of him. He is a thinker and a philosopher who enriches you. It is challenge when I work with him. I have to keep my brains constantly ticking for new ideas because of his creativity,” says the writer.
What the writer enjoys while working with Shyam Benegal the most is “that the director has maintained the rural India in his films. He is firmly rooted. Right from Ankur to Mahadev, director Benegal has always made films on the common man. He never went abroad to shoot his films.”
Like his mentor Shyam Benegal, writer Ashok Mishra sees to it that his scripts are rooted to his country. “I try and explore the different dialects and languages of the country. In Welocme to Sajjanpur I have had Bagelkhandi language. In Benegal’s Samar it was Bundelkhandi. In Patwardhan’s Devi Ahilya I have used Maheshwari
language which is a mix of all Indian languages.”
The writer an NSD student has had many hit films to his credit like Saeed Mirza’s Naseem, Shyam Benegal’s Samar, a National Award winning children’s film “Kabhi Paas Kabhi Fail, Jagmohan Mundhra’s Bawander, Jayu and Nachiket Patwardhan’s Devi Ahilya and Suhail Tutari’s Bhairavi. He is hopeful for the Indian cinema. “Film makers are now coming out with various subjects like Lagaan and Swades.” He hopes that someday he will turn to direction.
Ashok Mishra is now writing Sanjay Gupta’s next which is a humourous family satire. Not wanting to reveal much he says “It’s a complete family entertainer.” -(SAMPURN)
