Making a name in the glam-world with Mani Ratnam’s Jayam Kondaan, Lekha Washington is enjoying her success. This VJ turned actress has shown a lot of promise and the expectations have risen with her. The babe wasn’t an amateur before coming in front of the camera, “I studied film at NID. I always wanted to act and my first gig was a VJ.” Though she has a relation with lot of different states of India, she calls herself a Chennai girl. “My native place is Chennai. Born and brought up here. I’m actually part Maharastrian, part Italian, part Burmese, a mixed blood! But I’ll always consider myself a Chennai girl,” says Lekha. She has also done couple of commercials. She sure has earned a lot of fan following but her parents didn’t wanted her to get into the movies. “I have always loved to pretend to be another person. And I’ve always wanted to act. My parents said – don’t go to the cinema field, its bad – but my desire never died, and here I am,” smiles the actress. Where other stars opt for Bollywood, Lekha feels satisfied to work in Tamil cinema, “Chennai is a safe place. It’s our home. Besides, we aren’t rich to go off to Mumbai, and become a star or whatever. Chennai was home and an easy place to start.” Her career as a VJ helped her get noticed and that’s how she got Jayam Kondaan. “The movie’s director, Kannan sir, liked my VJ-ing, and asked me to come and act. He said I would really like the character he wanted me to play,” shares Lekha. Kannan had been an assistant to noted director Mani Ratnam and the actress is all praise for hi, “Mani sir has groomed Kannan really well. Kannan is a fabulous director; easy to work with, yet firm, and he’s written such a good character.” Her favourite movies, “I liked The Namesake, Mumbai Meri Jaan, and Maddy’s Evanao Oruvan. My preference is not for mainstream films.” Like any other actress she is dying to work with superstar Rajnikanth. This hot babe is also ready to shed her clothes if the script demands. It looks she is ready to compete with the other Tamil actresses in a big way and understands the trend of the cinema very well. “I am ready to do glam roles but it all depends on the character. I’d dance, but I prefer something challenging,” utters the actress. Apart from acting and watching movies, she is also fond of reading a lot. “I read a lot. Milan Kundera, graphic novels, Neil Gaiman is my favorite,” speaks the diva.  – (SAMPURN)
