At least 50 killed in Gaza ground operation

Gaza, Jan 4 (Xinhua) At least 50 people have been killed since Israel launched its ground operation Saturday evening on the Gaza Strip, officials here said Sunday.Mo’aweya Hassanein, chief of emergency and ambulance services in Palestine Health Ministry, said there could be more fatalities as medical teams could not reach some of the areas that are under heavy Israeli fire.

The official said more than 500 Palestinians have been killed since Israel launched its massive military attack on the salient Dec 27 in response to the stepped up rocket fire towards southern Israel by Gaza militants.

Israeli troops entered the strip after eight days of intensive air strikes, targeting Hamas security installations.
