Google has blamed an error in one of its systems for a glitch that earlier today saw hundreds of thousands of internet users world-wide unable to access many of its services, including the Google News website.
In an article posted on its official company blog, Urs Hoelzle, senior vice president operations, said, “about 14 percent of our users experienced slow services or interruptions [when] one of our systems caused us to direct some of our web traffic through Asia.”
Drawing a parallel between aircraft flying between New York and San Francisco, Hoelzle asked Google users to imagine their aircraft, along with a bunch of others, being routed through an airport in Asia resulting in a longer than expected flight time.
An apologetic Hoelzle said Google was, “very sorry that it happened, and you can be sure that we’ll be working even harder to make sure that a similar problem won’t happen again”.
“We’ve been working hard to make our services ultrafast and ‘always on’, so it’s especially embarrassing when a glitch like this one happens”, Hoelzle added.
