priya krishna defeats V Somanna in Govindrajnagar bypoll

Congressman Priya Krishna wins the Govindrajnagar by-poll elections defeating his rival from the BJP, Murzai Minister V Somanna. Krishna won by a huge margin of 5,239 votes. The 25 year old Krishna, a debutant in politics has drubbed his rival, the 59 year old, four time MLA who won the same seat with a Congress ticket in 2008 but who later jumped to the BJP just before the polls. Somanna won a berth in the State BJP Government because of this move

Chief minister B S Yeddyurappa: Our defeat in Govindarajanagar, Channapatna and Ramanagaram was due to an understanding between Congress and JD(S). It is not a mandate against Operation Lotus.

JD(S) national president H D Deve Gowda: I am very happy with the results. No one can destroy JD(S) because it enjoys the support of people. By defeating the defectors, people have voted against ‘Operation Lotus’ and taught a lesson to BJP. They have also sent a clear message not to force unnecessary polls by defection. By humbling an influential politician (V Somanna) who has the blessings of pontiffs, the people have shown politicians how they should be in future.
